My PC Infected with Brontok Virus

(Visited 1232 times)

Today, when I use my PC, suddenly my eye cought by a file named “baca bro.txt”. I opened it, and there is some text in Indonesian language, but the top of the text file is “Brontok”. At first, I thought there was a hacker just hacked into my PC and left that note. So, I decided to just delete it, and run the AVG antivirus.

After a few minutes, suddenly, my computer restart by itself. What the hell???!!

When it finished booted up, I quickly search on Google about “baca bro.txt”. And I was shocked to find out that the brontok virus will be activate if the txt file is opened. I tried to seach about “clean brontok” on the Google, and the Internet Explorer close by itself once I clicked the search button. Tried to open MSConfig, but it failed to run. Even some of my applications return error when it were execute.

I don’t believe that my AVG failed to trap the virus!

Fortunately, I did not panic (If I panic, I would just format the hard disk and resetup Windows XP). Did some simple step, and my PC back to normal again in a few minutes.

What I did:

1. Do not panic

2. Restart the PC into the Safe Mode

3. Open Windows System Restore > pick a point a few days before

4. After it is successfully restored, uninstall my AVG and restart the PC again

5. Install AVG again and update.

6. Scan and delete those infected files.

7. Finish.. (I hope!!)
